Syro Malabar Catholics Identity

1. Mar Thoma Nasrani Identity.    >>>>      

Syro-Malabar Catholic church is an oriental church. But there is a big identity problem in this community members.

Earlier this church was known as Mar Toma Nasrani Church. Now a days most of the Nasrani’s from this church claims that they are Roman Catholics (RC). If someone ask about their Caste/ religion, they proudly say that “RC”.

But is it correct? Did they ever think about this?

Roman Catholics means, those who follows the Latin Liturgy/Mass. In Kerala, only the Latin Catholics follows Roman /Latin Rite. So they can be called as Roman Catholics or RC. Syro Malabar Catholic church do not follow the Roman/Latin Liturgy ( Aaradhana Kramam) . Syro Malabar Church follows East Syriac (Aramaic traditions) Liturgy. Syro- Malabar Catholics can be called as Mar Thoma Nasrani or Syrian Catholic or Suriani Catholics.

Each church has its own beautiful traditions and Liturgy. We must be proud to say that we are Nasranis or Syro Malabar Catholics.
